A full-length portrait of Gertrude McCurdy Hubbard, standing outdoors in the yard at Twin Oaks, the Washington, D.C., home of the Gardiner Greene Hubbard family, shows a private setting rather than a formal studio. Gardiner Greene Hubbard was a Washington lawyer who helped found the National Geographic Society in 1888, and his family was closely tied to Alexander Graham Bell, who married his daughter Mabel. The picture belongs to the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell photographs, assembled by Grosvenor, who was Bell's son-in-law and later led the National Geographic Society. Its caption card is unverified, so the sitter's identity and the picture's date, given as about 1905, rest on that card.
