Gertrude McCurdy Hubbard stands on the second-story porch of Twin Oaks, the Washington, D.C., home of the family of Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a lawyer and early leader of the National Geographic Society. Her family's connections reached well beyond the capital. Hubbard's daughter Mabel married Alexander Graham Bell, and Hubbard was one of the financial backers who helped support Bell's work on the telephone in the 1870s. The picture comes from the Gilbert H. Grosvenor Collection of Bell photographs, so it offers a glimpse of the domestic life of a family close to one of the era's major inventions.
