Sleds and sleighs drawn up beside a church give this chromolithograph its particular setting: a winter Sunday, as the title "Winter Sunday in olden times" says. The print was issued by F. Gleason of Boston around 1875, when color lithography was a popular way to reproduce sentimental scenes for middle-class homes. Its nostalgic tone reflects the period's fondness for picturing rural and small-town customs as simpler than the present. The color printing, made with a separate stone for each hue, is worth noticing in the snow and sky.
