Moss Grotto is named for a shaded rocky hollow, the kind of damp, fern-and-moss recess that 19th-century travelers and landscape artists prized along the rivers and ridges of the Delaware Water Gap. The gap, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge, drew growing numbers of visitors once railroads and resort hotels reached the area in the 1800s. Scenes like this one reflect that period's taste for wild, picturesque nature, and they often show how people reached and framed these places before the region became a recreation area.
