Fishermen and a rowboat share a quiet stretch of riverbank here, with wooded hills rising behind them, a view that places the scene along the Delaware River where it cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge at the Delaware Water Gap on the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border. The gap is a notch the river wore through the ridge over a very long span of time, and it drew travelers, artists and anglers to the water well before the area became a national recreation area in 1965. Scenes like this one show how close the river and its fishing life once sat to the landscape.
