The Delaware Water Gap is where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge along the border of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and this 1911 panorama captures the river winding between wooded slopes before the gap became a major recreation area. In the early 1900s the region was a growing destination for summer visitors arriving by rail, drawn by hotels, boating and hiking along the bluffs. The sepia tone, common in photographs of that era, lends the scene a warm, aged quality while preserving the broad sweep of the valley. Panoramic views like this one were popular postcard subjects and offer a useful record of how the landscape looked before later development.
