Moss Cataract is a waterfall, and its name marks it as one of the many cascades that draw visitors into the rugged hills around the Delaware Water Gap. The gap itself is where the Delaware River has cut through the Kittatinny Ridge, a geologic feature that shaped the scenery and the trails. From the 19th century onward, travelers came to the area by rail and steamboat to see such falls, and the region was later protected as the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in 1965. Notice how the rock, water, and forest cover combine in the scene, the setting that made these waterfalls so popular with painters and photographers.
