The crimson-fronted purple finch is set apart by its male plumage, with a rosy-red head and breast that contrasts with the browner females and young birds of the same species. John James Audubon drew the study himself, and this color engraving reproduces it through the work of J.T. Bowen, the Philadelphia engraver who produced plates for the smaller octavo edition of Audubon's bird book, where this one is numbered 197. The octavo volumes made Audubon's detailed natural-history images far more affordable than the enormous original folio, reaching schools, families and amateur naturalists. The record gives no date, so the year of printing is uncertain.
