Audubon's Arctic jaeger is shown here as a restless hunter, a northern seabird that makes its living by harrying other birds. Robert Havell engraved the copper plate and hand-colored the impressions after Audubon's drawing, and the image appears as plate 267 in volume four of the Birds of America Elephant Folio. Jaegers chase gulls and terns until the victims drop or disgorge their catch, a habit Audubon found worth recording. The folio's generous scale lets the bird's body and wings register at close to their natural size.
