Few birds feed the way the black skimmer does, slicing the surface of shallow water with its longer lower bill as it flies low. This color engraving reproduces Audubon's drawing as Robert Havell engraved it for the Elephant Folio edition of *The Birds of America*, where it appears as plate 323 in the third volume. The prints were colored by hand, so the black, white, and red-orange tones on the page reflect the workshop as much as Audubon's original painting. The record gives no date for this impression, but it belongs to a project issued in London between 1827 and 1838.
