Few pictures on this board show a log as massive as the one here, a spruce said to measure 30 feet around, with a team of horses straining to drag it through the Cascade Mountains of Washington. Seattle photographer Darius Kinsey made his reputation recording the region's logging camps and timber operations, and this print, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1905, shows how much of that work depended on animal power before steam-powered haulers became common. The catalog record for the picture comes from an old caption card, so its details are unverified, but the scene itself captures the scale of the early Northwest timber trade.
