The tavern's name, the stagecoach at its door, and the crowd of people and horses make this an unusually lively scene among pictures of working animals. Taverns like the Eagle served as inns and changing stations on stage routes, where fresh teams were hitched and passengers ate and rested. The caption card records no date, but the stagecoach itself points to the decades before railroads took over long-distance travel. Look closely at the horses' harness and the ease of the people standing around, which show how central these animals were to daily life on the road.
