Advertising a sale of 1,000 horses in a single auction, this color poster from 1894 promises a crowd of "high-class" harness and saddle animals, a bold claim for a printed bill. It was produced in Buffalo, New York, by the Courier Company's Show Printing House, a shop that turned out many circus and sale posters of the period. Harness horses, the trotters and pacers that pulled light carriages, and saddle horses were prized stock in the 1890s, when horse ownership still signaled wealth and standing. The record credits the artwork to Lynwood Palmer, though that attribution is unverified.
