The title points to Robert Planquette's comic opera *The Chimes of Normandy*, which premiered in Paris in 1877. Its story of a Norman village, legendary bells, a lost heir, and tangled identities made it a hit on English-speaking stages. This black-and-white lithograph was produced in New York in 1879 by the Metropolitan Lithographic Studio, signed by an artist named Renault, and marked with J.E. Jackson as agent. The copyright notice shows it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that was becoming common for theatrical art of the period.
