Old Faithful, in Yellowstone National Park, is the geyser that gives this view its focus: a tall column of water rising above the surrounding evergreen forest and the winding river below. The geyser was named by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition of 1870, which noted how regularly it erupted compared with other features in the basin. Its reliability made it a favorite of early visitors and a centerpiece of the park's promotion, and the wider landscape around it shows how the geyser basin sits within the larger Yellowstone plateau.
