Union and Confederate veterans gathered under a large assembly tent at the 1913 reunion, held for the fiftieth anniversary of the battle fought around Gettysburg in July 1863. The encampment drew tens of thousands of former soldiers, many of them elderly, who came to renew old comradeships and to look back on a war that had split the country. Men who had once faced each other in battle now shared the same space, which reflected the sectional reconciliation that shaped many of the era's commemorations. The picture captures that mood of shared memory.
