The marker, which Pennsylvania placed to recognize the speech, points to the spot where Abraham Lincoln delivered his address on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery. The battle of Gettysburg had ended four months earlier, and the cemetery was laid out to bury the Union dead. Edward Everett gave the main oration that day, lasting about two hours, while Lincoln spoke for only a few minutes. His brief remarks came to be seen as one of the most important statements of the purpose of the war and of the nation's founding principles.
