Members of the Knights Templar, a Masonic-affiliated order, are caught in these outdoor field day exercises, competitive drill and ceremonial displays that were a common feature of fraternal life in the 1920s. Such events showcased marching, formation work and ritual precision before crowds of members and their families. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, recorded many gatherings like this one, and its glass negatives were later given to the Library of Congress. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating, and the title comes from the company's own unverified notes.
