Relying on words alone, this 1915 recruiting poster makes its case without any picture. It speaks directly to the reader, saying that his comrades are already fighting at Gallipoli and that football and tennis no longer suit the moment. The Dardanelles campaign, which began in April 1915, had by then become a costly struggle, and appeals like this one drew on the sense that men at home were being called to account. Its sharp contrast between sport and sacrifice shows the pressure placed on young British men to enlist in the war's early years.
