With no illustration at all, this poster relies entirely on a block of text urging men to enlist. Its language is blunt: the enemy is a "barbarian" who violates, plunders and murders, and he is described as almost at Britain's gates. Printed in 1915, it draws on wartime propaganda that cited German conduct in occupied Belgium in 1914 to cast the war as a defense of home. Britain still relied on volunteers at that point, and posters like this one aimed to make the threat feel immediate.
