Journal Square was one of the busiest transit hubs in Jersey City, and this 1931 ink drawing shows the State theater on Hudson Boulevard there, a movie palace built during the late 1920s boom in large downtown theaters. Drawings like this one, held in the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering collection, were used to plan and document a building's construction and alterations. The State was designed to seat thousands and to draw crowds from across the city and nearby towns, so its scale and street presence were central to its purpose. Looking closely at the linework shows how architects of the period worked out a large commercial building before it was ever built.
