Hudson Street near First Street in Hoboken, New Jersey, is the setting for this 1929 ink drawing of the Rialto theater. The record also gives the names Rialto Stock theater and Empire theater, a reminder that neighborhood houses often changed names as their owners and programming changed. Hoboken's movie palaces of the 1920s were part of a national boom in motion picture theaters, when cities and towns across the country built houses for the new films and live acts. Architectural drawings like this one show how such buildings were laid out on paper before they were built or altered.
