The Stanley theater at Journal Square in Jersey City was built at a busy crossroads of trolley and rail lines, which made the site a natural home for a large public entertainment house. This 1928 ink drawing shows the building at the planning stage, when architects settled the layouts and details that builders would later follow. The Stanley was one of many theaters run by the Stanley Company of America, which in the late 1920s was filling cities with lavish movie palaces as moviegoing boomed and sound film arrived. Architectural drawings like this one, preserved in the Library of Congress's collection, show how such buildings were conceived before any construction began.
