Broad Street in downtown Trenton, near its junction with East State Street, is the setting for this 1931 ink drawing of the Grand theater, also known as the Broad Street theater. Its catalog subjects place it among the motion picture houses that filled American city centers in the 1930s, when sound films drew large crowds and new theaters were often designed as showpieces. As a construction-style drawing rather than a picture of the finished building, it shows how the architects planned the hall, and it is a useful record of how a neighborhood theater was conceived in that decade.
