Fire, more than the earthquake itself, destroyed much of San Francisco after the shaking stopped on the morning of April 18, 1906, and this view shows that smoke-filled aftermath. Broken gas mains and overturned stoves started blazes that spread for several days through neighborhoods of wood-frame houses, while water pressure failed and firefighters had little to work with. The image was copyrighted by the Pillsbury Picture Co. and carries the number 112, part of the commercial photographic views that circulated widely after the disaster. The record is thin, so the exact vantage point and date are uncertain.
