The title pairs Herbert Hoover with a man named Alexander, but the record does not identify Alexander, and the title itself comes from unverified notes on the negative sleeves. The date of about 1921 places the sitting in the year Hoover became Secretary of Commerce under President Warren G. Harding, a post he held until 1928. The National Photo Company, which worked in Washington, D.C., from about 1906 to 1932, recorded many officials of that era on glass negatives like this one. The streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
