Few remedies of the 1860s carried a name as particular as this one: a label for a preparation called Shakers' Frost Extractor, prepared by Chas. F. Crap of Philadelphia and registered under copyright number 962. Patent medicines of the period sold in a crowded market, and makers relied on eye-catching printed labels to set their bottles apart from rivals. Crap's copyright notice shows he sought legal protection for his design, a step that grew more common as proprietary remedies multiplied after the Civil War. Printed material like this is useful today because it shows how medicines were advertised before federal labeling rules took hold in the early twentieth century.
