Rendered in ink, wash, watercolor, and graphite, this perspective view presents the Library of Congress as its architects imagined it, the kind of presentation drawing used to show a proposed design before construction began. The building it depicts is the Thomas Jefferson Building on Capitol Hill, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz in the Beaux-Arts style and opened in 1897. Drawings like this one record the designers' intentions, which sometimes differ from the finished structure, so they reward comparison with photographs of the completed building.
