This glass negative is catalogued under the name Heifetz, most likely a reference to the violinist Jascha Heifetz, though the title comes from caption cards and has not been independently verified. Heifetz, born in Vilna in 1901, made his American debut in New York in 1917 and soon became one of the best-known concert violinists of his time. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Glass negatives like this one were a standard working medium for such agencies, and they hold a fine detail that prints made for daily papers often lost.
