Officers of the Rainbow Division, as this negative's caption card identifies them, belong to a unit that drew its men from National Guard regiments in many states, which is the reason for the name. The 42nd Infantry Division was organized in 1917 for service in the First World War, and its mix of state units gave it a reputation for being a national formation rather than a regional one. The Bain News Service, the Manhattan photo agency whose glass negatives make up this collection, worked during these years and sold pictures of military figures to newspapers. The record gives no firm date or names for the men shown, so the identification rests on the caption, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified.
