Heifetz is the subject of this glass negative, a portrait of the violinist Jascha Heifetz, who rose to fame as a prodigy and became one of the most celebrated concert performers of the twentieth century. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with news and celebrity images in New York from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The record gives no firm date, and its title is recorded from unverified caption data, so the exact sitting remains uncertain. Still, the glass plate format is worth noticing, since it reflects the fast, large-scale press photography of the agency's era.
