The record gives only the surname Heifetz, which most likely refers to the violinist Jascha Heifetz, whose American debut at Carnegie Hall in 1917 brought him wide attention. The plate comes from the Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency that produced pictures of performers, politicians and other newsmakers for newspapers from about 1900 into the 1920s. Because the title is unverified and no date is recorded, the exact sitting is hard to confirm, but the glass negative shows how the agency documented public life in that period.
