Birch trees are a frequent subject in Romantic-era landscape drawing, and this sketch stands out for placing a single slender trunk inside a tangle of undergrowth rather than in open ground. The artist seems more interested in the contrast between the pale, papery bark and the dark, crowded shrubs around it than in the tree as a standalone specimen. Sketches like this were often made outdoors as studies, capturing quick observations of light and texture that could later be worked into larger finished paintings. Notice how the loose, economical lines leave much of the white of the paper showing, which helps the tree seem to glow against the thicket.
