Painted in oil and dated 1882, this work by Percy Ives shows a woman standing beside a flowering tree, but its reverse carries a head-and-shoulders portrait of the poet Walt Whitman, which is what ties the piece to the Feinberg-Whitman Collection. Library of Congress staff devised the title, so the woman's identity and the scene's setting are not recorded. Charles E. Feinberg, a Detroit collector and Whitman scholar, assembled the collection, which the Library now holds, and its presence here shows how Whitman material came to be preserved alongside unrelated works.
