Tall trees rise out of a dense tangle of leafy undergrowth here, with sunlight breaking through the canopy and falling onto the forest floor. Scenes like this were a favorite subject for nineteenth-century landscape painters and photographers, who prized the contrast between shadowed trunks and bright patches of light as a way to suggest depth and the quiet of the woods. Such views also reflected a growing interest in recording native forests at a time when many were being cleared for timber and farmland. The record gives no specific location, so the picture is best read as a study of the forest itself, its layered greenery and the play of light through it.
