Among the landscape etchings of the 1640s, this print stands out for three trees rising from a low bank beneath a heavy, shifting sky. It is usually attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn, who made it in 1643 with fine, varied lines, so the trunks and foliage seem to catch the light while the clouds darken around them. Rembrandt treated the open countryside as a subject in its own right rather than as a backdrop, and the print's layered tones and range of marks still reward close looking.
