Shaded water runs over stones beneath a tangle of trees and low undergrowth, and the painter has let the light fall in broken patches across the surface. Landscapes of this kind were a staple of the nineteenth century, when artists went out to sketch the woods near towns and then finished the work in the studio. Woodland streams were especially popular subjects because they combined the calm of still water with the wild growth of the forest. Look closely at the leaves and the reflections in the water to see how the painter balanced careful observation with a looser, more atmospheric touch.
