Adolphe Hervier's etching shows a barricade on a Paris street during the June Days of 1848, when the workers' uprising that followed the February Revolution was crushed by the National Guard and regular troops. The print is one of 43 plates collected in the Album Hervier, published in 1888 by L. Joly in an edition of 250, and it is signed and dated on the plate. Hervier, who lived from 1821 to 1879, worked from memory and period sources to record the street fighting, and the heavy drypoint work gives the stones and scattered debris a dense, dark texture.
