Few buildings in Paris are as recognizable as the west front of Notre-Dame, with its three great portals, rose window, and twin towers. Construction began in 1163, and the facade was largely complete by the mid-13th century, making it a landmark of French Gothic design. The caption card gives no date or photographer, so the picture is best read as a view of the building itself, including its gallery of kings. Its sculpted doorways once taught scripture to medieval visitors who could not read.
