Sedalia, Missouri, in 1911 was a railroad and farm-trade town in Pettis County, where the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) line and its shops gave many residents steady wages. Surrounding farms sent livestock, grain, and produce to market, and the annual fair was the town's biggest yearly gathering, drawing exhibitors and visitors from across central Missouri. Ribbon winners and their families were local celebrities, and the fairgrounds stood as a point of civic pride. Sedalia had also been known for its ragtime music in the 1890s, when Scott Joplin lived and played there, though by 1911 that reputation belonged more to memory than to daily life. This photograph preserves a moment when the fair's prizes mattered as much to the town's standing as to the people who won them.
