Printed in color, this postcard portrait of Erich Ludendorff belongs to a German wartime series that presented military leaders as symbols of national pride. Ludendorff served as First Quartermaster General and, from 1916, worked closely with Paul von Hindenburg to direct the German army's strategy for the rest of the war. Cards like this were produced in large numbers and sent to home audiences, helping turn generals into familiar public faces. The record dates the card only to 1914 to 1918, so its exact date of printing is uncertain.
