Few views from the Civil War years pair the capital with the ground across the river quite like this one, which places the District of Columbia and the Potomac front on a single colored sheet. Washington lithographer Casimir Bohn made the view, and the Baltimore firm E. Sachse & Co. published it, at a time when the city was ringed with forts and camps and the Potomac marked the line between Union Washington and Confederate Virginia. Maps of this kind helped viewers follow troop positions and the defenses around the capital. Its color and close detail make it a useful record of how the war reshaped the city's surroundings.
