Dated 1864, Gaylord Watson's *Our Patriots of the War* comes from the later stretch of the Civil War, when Union supporters often turned to pictorial art to honor soldiers and leaders and to frame the conflict as a shared national cause. The title speaks directly to that mood. Its placement under the U.S. Capitol heading points to Washington as the seat of the federal government the war was fought to preserve. At 36 by 28 inches, the sheet is large enough to suit a parlor or public room, which was typical of patriotic prints of the period.
