The 1919 color lithograph titled "Friede, Arbeit, Brot" by Wera von Bartels asks for three things postwar Germany lacked: peace, work and bread. It appeared in the months after the armistice of November 1918, when the Allied blockade still restricted food imports and demobilized soldiers returned to a shrinking job market, so the slogan spoke directly to a population worn down by four years of war. Handwritten notes on the reverse show that the poster passed through a private collection in Leipzig in May 1919 before entering the Rehse-Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, which preserved it as a record of wartime and postwar propaganda.
