The title, "Frieden ... Kriegsanleihe," reads "Peace ... War Loan," and it shows how the poster tied the public's purchase of government bonds to hopes for an end to the fighting. Austria-Hungary financed much of its war effort by selling war bonds to ordinary citizens, and posters like this one were a main tool for persuading people to lend their savings to the state. Vienna's Gesellschaft für Graphische Industrie published this color lithograph in 1917, when the war had dragged on for three years and the economic strain on the home front was severe. The artist, I. Bohatta, is credited on the sheet, and the design is worth studying for how it balances an emotional appeal with a plain financial request.
