An old freight depot, with little else in its record, stands in for the many working stations that once lined American rail routes. Freight depots were the unglamorous side of the railroad: sheds where crates, grain, lumber and merchandise were loaded onto and off of boxcars, usually set beside a siding so wagons could pull up to the platform. Such buildings were typically built of wood or brick with wide loading doors and overhanging roofs to shelter goods from rain. Worth noticing in a picture like this are the platform edges, the rail spurs, and the marks of heavy daily use.
