Legal Tender was one of many brand names that Pacific Northwest and California growers pressed onto wooden crate labels in the early twentieth century, when the apple box was the main way a grower's fruit reached distant markets. The name itself, a nod to the currency of the day, was meant to suggest that the apples inside were as good as money. Crate labels like this one were colorful lithographed advertisements, and collectors and historians now study them for their typography, their vivid color, and what they reveal about how fruit was sold to shoppers across the country.
