Few objects capture the early twentieth-century fruit trade quite like a crate label, and this one carries the name "Nuchief," a brand used on Washington apples. Crate labels were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping boxes so that buyers in distant markets could recognize a grower's fruit at a glance. Their bold color lithography was meant to catch the eye on a crowded grocer's shelf or railway platform. Washington's orchards, especially in the Yakima and Wenatchee valleys, sent large volumes of apples east by rail during this period, and labels like this one were part of how growers built reputations for quality.
