A crate label showing a young girl among apples, printed for the Laurie Brand from Washington State, is a good example of how growers marketed their fruit in the early twentieth century. Apple crates were shipped across the country by rail, and the bright chromolithographed labels were pasted on the ends to catch the eye of buyers in crowded produce markets and grocers' displays. Images of children, healthy and cheerful, were a common way to suggest that the fruit inside was wholesome and fresh. Look closely at the color work, which was built up in layers of ink, typical of commercial lithography of the period.
