Washington apple crate labels like this one were printed to sell fruit from the state's orchards to buyers far beyond the Pacific Northwest, and the "Tapestry" name marks this particular brand among the many that crowded the grocery and produce trade in the early twentieth century. Crate labels were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping boxes, so their bright lithography did the work of advertising at railway platforms and in shop windows. Growers and packing houses competed through these colorful designs, and the labels now record how the apple industry presented itself to customers across the country.
